We are proud to operate a licensed green waste composting facility on a disused Battle of Britain airfield near Chichester. We currently process in excess of 30000 tons of green waste annually, turning this into a range of high quality peat free composts and soil conditioning products.  Wood waste is processed into a woodchip suitable for boardmaking (e.g. chipboard, MDF) and a renewable energy fuel.

Current sources of green waste include local Household Waste Recycling Centres, Horticultural Nurseries, landscape gardening firms and suppliers of waste wood and pallets.

The composting process is totally natural – we only add air and recycled rain water! Thus composting is true recycling, turning plant waste into a soil improver that helps grow new plants!

Much of the compost is used on our own organic farm (the enterprise is closely monitored by Organic Farmers and Growers and the finished compost is ‘certified for organic use’) and we sell a range of carefully prepared products to both the trade and general public.

The Process

Green Waste is shred and placed in large piles or ‘windrows’ and thus starts the main active composting phase. This will last between 12 and 20 weeks during which composting temperatures are maintained at around 60 degrees centigrade. The windrow is turned regularly ensuring thorough mixing and to keep the compost aererated as the process is aerobic (requires air). The high temperatures effectively sterilise the compost destroying any weed seeds that might have been present in the original material.

When temperatures fall and stabilise, the active composting phase is complete. The compost is then screened to reduce particle size. This screened compost is then stored for the ‘maturation phase’ which last around 6 months. It is then ready for use. Click on Earth Cycle Soil Solutions to see our range of compost products.

Wood Waste

We accept waste wood, such as broken pallets and packaging, from a variety of sources including Household Waste Recycling Sites and local industry.  We create a clean woodchip that is suitable for boardmaking (e.g. MDF, chipboard) and for use as a renewable fuel.  All uses create significant environmental benefits to land filling.
